CFP: Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History

The Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History (APHES) has issued a call for papers for its annual meeting, which will be held in Braga on November 15-16, 2013. The conference theme will be "State, Society, and Markets in a Global World." The call for papers states:
The State’s role in the economic and social system has always been the subject of controversy, something which has been strengthened by the importance it gained in the 20th century.The economic and social policies that emerged from the State’s action in society, as well as the mechanisms used for its implementations. open a vast field of research that seeks new analyses and interpretations. Reflecting on the changes that have occurred in the relationships between market, society and State could provide an important contribution to the redefining that occurred with the role the State assumed in different historical contexts.
   Proposals should be accompanied by an abstract of 500 words maximum (including 4 keywords), indicating the objective, theoretical focus, and empirical support, if relevant and a brief CV (1 page limit) of the author, or in the case of various authors, of the main author. The deadline for the submission of proposals is May 31, 2013. Submissions should be sent to: 33aphes@gmail.com. Please see the conference website for details.

Digital Collection: Princeton Exhibit of Subway Posters

The Princeton University Library has digitized a number of posters from the Interborough Rapid Transit Subway Company . The posters, designed by the public relations firm Ivy Lee, were displayed in subway cars to provide information to riders about changes in fares and routes, safety issues, and other matters of interest.  The collection consists of 385 images dating from 1918 to 1932; many of them provide financial information about rates, company dividends, and a general look at an early rapid transit system. October 29, update: Jonathan Rees over at "More or Less Bunk" was moved by this post to go off in search of a better site, and found the massive collection of the London Transport Museum , which displays over 5,000 items in a searchable collection .

Wilfried Feldenkirchen (1947-2010)

With sadness we report the death of longtime BHC member Wilfried Feldenkirchen.  He died in  a car accident on June 21, 2010, while test driving a replica of Siemens' 1905 electric car, the Victoria , a project for which he was the manager.  He was professor of economic, social, and business history in the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.  A former trustee of the BHC and a member of the editorial board of Enterprise & Society , Professor Dr. Feldenkirchen specialized in nineteenth- and twentieth-century corporate and financial history, focusing particularly on Siemens.
