CfP for workshop "Minting History," and conference "The Development of Financial Markets" of the European Association for Banking and Financial History

Call for Papers: March 11th. Workshop: June 21st.

Both events will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia, and in cooperation with the Bank of Russia.

The organizers of the conference The Development of Financial Markets are interested in presentations that study some of the following topics:

• Primary as well as secondary financial markets: the history of stock exchanges, capital markets and securities markets
• The role of central banks
• Sovereign Risk
• Financial Innovation & Regulation
• (Institutional) Investors
• Bubbles & Busts

The conference will be a one-day event and attendees are expected to submit their presentations in advance, by May 21st, 2019. The CfP includes more details about the conference and interest parties can also contact c.hofmann@bankinghistory.org.


The archival workshop Minting History is intended for "minting and financial institutions' archivists, money museums and researchers."

Proposals on the topics below will be considered:

Precious metals and commodity money
• The relationship between mints and central banks
• State-building, coinage and political identity
• Competition between public and private mints, fraud and counterfeiting
• Big coins and small change: stratification of coinage and its effect on prices, markets and consumption patterns
• Slavery, empires, decolonialisation and specie currencies
• Gender at the mint. (The US Mint, e.g., was the first federal agency to employ women).
• How does money use differ among various social groups?
